Philosophy of the website’s design
The website of the Cité de l’Économie et de la Monnaie project aims to ensure the broadest possible access to its contents by all internauts, using the widest range of media, in compliance with the standards in force (W3C – WAI). The Cité de l’Économie et de la Monnaie website separates HTML code (the universally accessible part) from the CSS presentation (cascading style sheets – the part that deals with the presentation of a web page). This principle makes it possible to convey the same message to each user.
Compliance with W3C standards
- XHTML code complies with the XHTML 1.0 specification. It is tested using W3C’s HTML validator.
- CSS code complies with the CSS2 specification. It is tested using W3C’s CSS validator.
Structure and presentation
- By completely separating the presentation from the content, the use of CSS positioning properties allows documents to conserve a consistent order outside of CSS: title, content and menus.
- The Cité de l’Économie et de la Monnaie website is organised into sections containing articles on the same topic.
- The website’s pages are structured using h1 …h6 titles in the appropriate order.
- The presentation style is consistent across the whole of the Cité de l’Économie et de la Monnaie website.
Web browser compatibility
The Cité de l’Économie et de la Monnaie website is compatible with the web browsers currently in use with the exception of version 6 and older versions of Internet Explorer. We have chosen to no longer use these versions that are regarded as obsolete in terms of security and compliance with standards.

Navigation and links
- The plan of the Cité de l’Économie et de la Monnaie website is accessible from every page.
- The navigation menus reflect the information structure. They appear on each page and give access to the whole of the website at all times.
Display size and resizing
In order to allow users to change the size of the characters displayed on the Cité de l’Économie et de la Monnaie website, the layout is based on the use of relative units (ems and percentages) rather than absolute units (pixels).
To facilitate this resizing, the website can be consulted in a minimal presentation which does not specify any character size.
You can change the display size of the text :
- By clicking on the icons [AA+] and [AA-] displayed in the website’s different sections and articles
- With various web browsers : [Ctrl] + [scroll wheel]
- Internet Explorer: go into [Display] > [Text size] and choose
- Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Chrome: press [Ctrl] + [+] to enlarge and [Ctrl] + [-] to reduce
- Opera: press the [+] or [ – ] keys on the numeric keypad or go into [Display] > [Zoom] and [choose]
Images
A text equivalent is provided via the alt attribute of significant images, when they are not precisely described in the text that they illustrate. The alt attribute of non-significant images is empty. The layout does not use invisible images.
Language
- French is the default language; changes of language are indicated by means of the attribute xml:lang
- The main language of each page is specified in the attributes xml:lang and lang of the html element
Printable version
All of the pages are printable (Print icon on the website’s pages or File > Print or keys [CTRL] + [P] ) in a version that is suited to paper: the elements that are not necessary to read the page (principally the navigation menus) have been deleted.
Keyboard shortcut
In order to navigate using your keyboard, press [Tab] and keep pressing it until you select the desired link; validate it by pressing [Return]
Tables
The website does not use tables in its presentation in order to improve the quality and compatibility of the HTML pages.
Redirection
Possible redirection from one page to another is managed entirely by the server and not by markup.
